The earliest ash-glazes pottery came about by accident. As the ancient Chinese were firing their pottery, wood ash from the fire was carried through the kiln on the hot draught and then settled on the pots where the searing white heat melted it to a glass. Three thousand years later wood ash remains an important feature of pottery glaze-making.
